The US Department of Justice announced the former Chief Engineer of the cargo ship MV Selene Leader will receive eight months in prison after being found guilty of obstructing justice and violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships (APPS).

According to court documents, the Chief Engineer was arrested after allegedly supervising crew members as they illegally dumped waste overboard without first passing it through an oil water separator and then falsifying oil record books to cover it up.

Japan based operator, Hachiuma Steamship Co Ltd, was asked to payout a $1.8 million penalty, a proportion of which went to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
